Council gives first reading to update building codes to 2018 editions

Mayor Farmer introduced Leland Bouldin as the city’s new codes official. Bouldin told the council that the 2018 editions do not introduce many substantive changes for the city but that Tennessee requires municipalities to keep code adoptions within a seven-year timeframe of the model codes.
Vice Mayor Drew Campbell moved to approve the first reading and Alderman Jody Hensley seconded. The roll call vote was unanimous. The item remains at first-reading stage; no amendments or implementation dates were set during the meeting.
Council did not detail an implementation timeline beyond the procedural first-reading approval; staff indicated the change is intended to preserve compliance with state rules.
