Chardon council accepts $10,000 donation to police department from crime victim

At the Dec. 9 meeting, Police Chief Nas asked council to accept a $10,000 donation from a resident who had been the victim of a violent home invasion and who later attended court for the case. Chief Nas read the donor's card aloud: "Dear Chief Nas, thank yous always seem inadequate in expressing my appreciation for all the help and support your officers provided to me on December 1st, 2024 ..." The chief said the donor wanted the funds earmarked to help officers remain safe and effective.

Chief Nas recounted the incident: officers arrived during a chaotic scene in which gunfire had been reported; officers Sergeant Carlson and officers Clima and Mullet made the arrest and the suspect was later sentenced to a prison term that included gun specifications. "A lot of things went right that night," Chief Nas said, praising the officers' professional response.

Council followed the city's gift-acceptance policy and voted to accept the $10,000. The motion carried on a roll call with councilors recorded voting yes. City Manager Ben said staff would work with the chief to identify appropriate spending and then add the amount to appropriations by supplemental appropriation or permanent appropriations depending on timing.

The council did not discuss specific equipment purchases at that meeting; Chief Nas said he would consult with the manager and return recommendations to council for approval.
