Board approves music department trip for band and choir to perform and learn at Disney

The Regional School District 09 Board of Education authorized a proposed music department trip for band, orchestra and choir students to attend performances and workshops at Walt Disney World in March 2027.
Glenn Whitman, co‑director of the high school music program, described a four‑night itinerary that pairs performances at Disney Springs with Disney‑led educational “soundtrack sessions” and audio engineering workshops. Whitman told the board the trip fee covers transportation to and from the airport, airfare, domestic ground transport, four nights’ lodging at the Disney All‑Star Resort, park admissions, meals and music‑education programming; he said the choir’s audition had already been accepted.
Whitman said the program provides performance experience, professional mentoring, and nonacademic skills such as responsibility and teamwork. He estimated the program would include about 80 students but said any enrolled band, orchestra or choir student could participate.
A board member moved to authorize the 2027 music trip and the motion was seconded; the board voted and the motion carried unanimously. The board discussed the timing relative to other language and foreign‑exchange trips and asked staff to minimize disruption to academics and athletics when students travel.
The board also heard a brief report with photos from a recent France/Spain trip presented by Miss Kaufman; members highlighted cultural and language benefits and student reflections on increased confidence and independence.
The music trip authorization allows the program to proceed with planning and informing families; the board requested that final dates and the meeting date be included in circulated materials.
