Council to consider impeachment and replacement of BPW chairman at December meeting

Council Member House asked the Nov. 17 meeting to place consideration of impeachment and replacement of the Board of Public Works (BPW) chairman on the December council agenda.
City Attorney Jonce Chidister explained the required process for removal: a motion must specify cause that is a violation of law, ordinance or board/city policy; the council must hold an impeachment trial in which the member has an opportunity to respond; if a majority of the council together with the mayor find cause the office would be vacated, or alternatively two‑thirds of the council alone could vacate the office.
Mayor Denton Kooyman confirmed the matter will be placed on the December agenda. No substantive vote on removal occurred at the Nov. 17 meeting; the discussion was limited to placing the item on the next meeting’s agenda and to the attorney’s summary of legal process.
