Marlette council approves rezoning, MDOT contract and several local service awards

At its Oct. 7 meeting the Marlette City Council approved a rezoning for the Blatt property to commercial, authorized continued work with MDOT, awarded several service contracts including an LCR vacuum services contract, and approved park court striping and other local measures.
The Marlette City Council on Oct. 7 approved a series of resolutions and contract awards, including a rezoning of the Blatt property to commercial and a contract resolution to continue cooperation with the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The council voted unanimously on the Blatt Property Rezoning Resolution No. 07/2024 after Manager Rudzis said the Planning Commission recommended changing the parcel from residential to commercial. Councilmember Quade moved to adopt the resolution; Councilmember Wilson supported the motion. Roll call votes were Quade — yes; Wilson — yes; Bell — yes; Redman — yes; Hunter — yes; Kopacz — excused. The measure passed.
Council also approved MDOT Contract Resolution No. 08/2024 to continue work with the state transportation agency. Manager Rudzis requested the resolution; Councilmember Redman moved to approve and Councilmember Hunter seconded. Roll call votes were Bell — yes; Redman — yes; Wilson — yes; Hunter — yes; Quade — yes; Kopacz — excused. The resolution carried.
On procurement, the council accepted Townley Engineering’s recommendation and awarded the 2024 LCR vacuum truck services bid to Rick Kappel Excavating for $36,414.80. Councilmember Redman made the motion, seconded by Councilmember Quade; the motion carried.
The council approved awarding Rutherford Lot Striping $4,547 to repair and paint the tennis and pickleball courts at Marlette Community Park. Manager Rudzis said funds will come from the Sanilac County Community Foundation; Rutherford Lot Striping provided a $500 donation that reduced the contract price. Councilmember Hunter moved to approve the contract and Councilmember Redman seconded; the motion carried.
Other actions taken included keeping Trick-or-Treat hours at 5:30–7:00 p.m. on Oct. 31 (motion by Hunter, seconded by Redman) and directing DPW to place asphalt millings in the back alley between Fenner Street and Main Street (motion by Redman, seconded by Quade). A separate discussion about whether to purchase a vacuum truck for city use was tabled after Manager Rudzis said he had recommended not purchasing the truck in a provided memo.
The council conducted routine reports and business, then adjourned at 6:45 PM.
