Pam White, the new director of the Malden Nutrition Center, asked the Malden City Council on Nov. 17 to pursue a local sales tax to support the center.
White said organizers have discussed the idea with the county commissioner and neighboring mayors and that the measure would be a sales tax rather than a property tax. Mayor Denton Kooyman told the council the county clerk needs to determine how much tax authority is available and that proponents must collect 983 valid signatures by Jan. 27 to place an ordinance on the April ballot.
Council Member Jenkins moved that proponents reconvene between now and the next council meeting to bring a formal proposal for council consideration so it can be submitted to the county clerk in time; Council Member Beckett seconded and the motion passed 8–0.
The council did not vote on a specific tax rate or ordinance text; proponents are expected to return with a formal ordinance and required signature documentation.
