The district reported it engaged nationally recognized literacy expert Dr. Alfred Tatum during the sessions to guide planning and recommended anchoring instruction in evidence from the science of reading.
Presenters said the summit was not a standard professional development event but a strategic planning process intended to reshape instruction, interventions and monitoring so more students read at grade level. The district plans July work sessions to finalize actions and to publish components of the literacy plan.
Board members and community partners who attended the sessions told trustees they felt validated and energized by the process and described plans to implement targeted supports, tutoring partnerships and summer learning to sustain momentum.
