Representatives from Communities In Schools (CIS) told the Ferndale School Board on June 16 that CIS currently operates in five district schools using a tiered model (schoolwide supports, group interventions, and individualized case management). Presenters highlighted examples from across the district: a free‑bikes distribution for elementary students, a safety night and a multi‑part literacy day that included volunteer readers, a film tie‑in and hands‑on activities. Principals who spoke during a follow‑up Q&A credited CIS site coordinators with connecting families to outside services, supporting breakfast programs, and helping reduce barriers to attendance.
Principals also said CIS supports allowed schools to expand small‑group interventions and case management and to run incentive programs at the middle school level. CIS staff said they can provide data reports and scalable models for expanding supports into additional buildings.
