Eastpointe superintendent highlights Early Learning Center gains, outlines K'5 transition timeline

Superintendent Gibson used the Dec. 9 board meeting to report district achievements and next steps in a planned K'5 configuration, and to recognize staff and community partners.
Gibson told trustees the board had earned an "honor board" designation from the Michigan Association of School Boards after members completed level-one certification. He thanked outgoing trustees for their service and summarized a Nov. 27 6'12 visioning meeting that aimed to shape the district's secondary program, citing continued emphasis on career and technical education and community partnerships.
Principal Valerie Jens presented an update on the Early Learning Center (ELC). Jens showed classroom activities, community field trips and family-engagement events and reported assessment and attendance figures: parent-teacher conference attendance for GSRP families was reported at 80 percent and at 63 percent for ECS C families; Jenkins reported improvement in early literacy measures over a six-week period (decline in the share "below expectation" on letter ID and growth in letter-sound and counting measures). Jens described family events, volunteer programs and a pilot "Dads of Great Students" Watchdog program aimed at increasing family participation.
On reconfiguration, Gibson reiterated that the board previously approved a shift to four K'5 elementary schools and said the district is finalizing attendance zones. He said the district plans to finalize and communicate an attendance-zone map to families on Feb. 1, 2025, with a March 17 deadline for district transfer and school-of-choice requests; administrators will notify families about assigned schools, transportation and open houses.
During the hearing of the public, Michael Phillips raised a student-safety concern about his daughter at Forest Park Elementary; district staff recorded his information for follow-up. Other commenters praised staff and school activities and noted athletics results.
The board voted to approve instructional and non-instructional new hires; administrators welcomed new employees at the meeting. The board also approved the consent agenda earlier in the session.
Gibson and principal Jens closed with plans for upcoming family events and holiday schedules and thanked staff for community engagement; the meeting adjourned at 7:23 p.m.
