Ross Gorman, president of the ELA, addressed the board during public comment on Oct. 28 and praised the district's new school-safety staff for their positive interactions with students and staff. "I've not had a single student this year tell me that they feel unsafe using the bathroom," Gorman said, a remark he used to illustrate his view that the safety hires have helped restore a sense of normalcy in buildings.
Gorman also described a districtwide effort to update and reevaluate 504 plans and accommodations. He said meetings involving students, teachers, parents and counselors are under way, and that the district's new special-education director is personally overseeing the reviews. Gorman said teachers have developed digital tracking tools to log accommodations and help ensure supports are in place.
Gorman opened by saying this school year "feels normal" to many staff after pandemic-related disruptions and thanked the board for listening. His remarks reflected staff perspective on safety, special-education workload and professional development efforts described by the superintendent earlier in the meeting.
