Superintendent: East Lansing hosting MSAN student conference; professional development and clinic advisory meeting announced

At the Nov. 11 meeting Superintendent Leo updated the East Lansing Board of Education on district events and staff development. The district is hosting the National Multicultural Student Achievement Network (MSAN) student conference at Michigan State University’s Kellogg Center this week and will welcome “over 200” MSAN students and chaperones for panels, a campus tour and keynotes.
The superintendent noted the keynote for Friday changed and that Miles Johnson, identified as a county commissioner, was expected to appear; earlier announcements had listed another speaker. Leo also referenced a keynote appearance earlier in the week by a youth activist described in the presentation as “Little Miss Flint Mari copy, a youth activist from Flint who is best known for raising awareness about the Flint Water Crisis.”
Leo summarized the district’s recent professional learning day (Nov. 1), describing about 20 staff sessions across three buckets aligned to the district mission—nurturing each child, educating all students and building world citizens—including topics such as social‑emotional learning, minority stress and mental health, digital best practices, math engagement strategies and transition IEP guidance. Leo said the next professional learning Friday is Feb. 14, 2025.
The superintendent also reminded the public that the school-based health clinic Community Advisory Committee will meet Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the East Lansing High School Hub; the meeting is open to current participants and anyone interested in joining.
Board members asked how many district students were participating in MSAN; staff replied that about 9–10 district students were involved and that several had been active participants in planning this year’s conference.
