At the Sept. 23 meeting of the Eastpointe Community Schools Board of Education, Superintendent Gibson delivered the district's monthly report, highlighting staff and student recognitions, extracurricular participation and the public launch of a strategic-planning webpage.
Gibson said the district opened nominations for Teacher of the Year and noted four honorees he said would be recognized: "ELC Teacher of the Year Karen Liser H., social worker Kelly Berg, high-school student Samantha Gilbert and Chef Candace Schumake," each singled out for long service or program success. He said the culinary program leaves graduates with Serve Safe certifications and industry-ready skills.
Gibson described broader district activity, citing strong parent engagement at back-to-school nights, expanded fifth-grade band participation (more than 40 students at one school), growth in cross-country including middle-school participants, and a lineup of fall events. He also announced a strategic-planning page on the district website that displays the district's five strategic goals and key performance indicators to track progress.
The superintendent noted upcoming dates and logistical items: Sept. 30 will be a staff professional learning day (no school for students), Oct. 3 is the Chamber's Salute to Excellence (tickets $32), Oct. 10 is a food distribution (now at 9:30 a.m.), and Oct. 12 is the homecoming game at Memorial Field. Gibson closed by thanking principals, staff and volunteers for the start-of-year work.
