Superintendent Christina Gibson outlines fall registration, summer programs and preschool enrollment

Superintendent Christina Gibson used the July 22 board meeting to highlight summer and fall family services for Eastpointe Community Schools, including open registration, expanded camp scholarships and preschool enrollment.
Gibson told board members and attendees that "we're going to continue on with the theme of moments that matter and we're going to share a few more of those" as she reviewed district programs. She said fall registration is open online and that families who need in-person help can visit the administration building at 24685 Kelly Road from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. beginning Aug. 13; district schools will open for in-person enrollment on Aug. 13.
Gibson said the district expanded its camper scholarship program, using federal Title I funds to offer eight scholarships this year. Students nominated by building principals were transported this week to Camp Skyline in Almont, Michigan, and the district supplied needed items such as sleeping bags and luggage so students could attend.
She credited the Balmer Foundation and United Way for a large grant that helped fund Summer Discovery programming, which included educational visits (the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village), a mobile planetarium, visiting animal exhibits and partnerships with the Boys & Girls Club for team sports and other enrichment activities.
On early childhood education, Gibson promoted the Eastpointe Early Learning Center Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) for 4-year-olds, noting that a recently posted enrollment video, produced with staff including Caitlyn Kenet, yielded roughly 16 applications. She urged families to enroll and said the district will continue outreach through a mailed Community Newsletter that begins distribution at the end of the week.
Gibson also summarized food and health supports: the district's "Meetup and Eat Up" summer meals run through Aug. 8 at Eastpointe High School and Eastpointe Middle School (breakfast 8–9 a.m.; lunch 10:30 a.m.–noon; meals must be eaten on site and are open to the community). She listed upcoming dates including a Gleaner mobile food distribution on Aug. 1, the K-9 summer program concluding Aug. 8, the New Teacher Academy Aug. 13–15, staff return Aug. 20, fall sports beginning Aug. 21, and a half day for students on Aug. 26.
