The Sharon Board of Education on May 11 directed Superintendent Melony Brady-Shanley to sign a contract with Community Health and Wellness to operate a school-based health clinic at Sharon Center School beginning in the fall of 2026. The motion, made by Nancy Hegy Martin and seconded by Pam Jarvis, carried unanimously.
The decision followed public comment in which community members including Michael Nolan, Kylie McCarron and Veronica Betts voiced support for the clinic and a petition in favor of hosting services at Sharon Center School. Meghan Flanagan asked the board why it would add funds to the district’s Non-Lapsing account when that account currently holds $116,000.
At the same meeting the board accepted tuition families for the 2026–2027 school year. The board approved enrollment configurations reported by staff — either Early Kindergarten 7 and Kindergarten 14, or Early Kindergarten 6 and Kindergarten 15 — in a motion made by Nancy Hegy Martin and seconded by Peter Birnbaum. Board member Pam Jarvis recused herself from that vote; the motion carried.
Principal Carol Tomkalski provided series-by-series end-of-year surplus figures during the consent discussion, and Chair Philip O’Reilly asked about the District Repair and Improvement Project (DRIP), described in the minutes as approximately $30,000. Superintendent Brady-Shanley said the DRIP money is expected to go to the Town in May but that it was not yet certain who would control the funds; the minutes note the grant has no expiration.
The board also approved the 3000-series policies as written in a unanimous vote and reviewed reports from Principal Tomkalski, Assistant Superintendent Jeanine Rose and Superintendent Brady-Shanley. Board members discussed topics for a summer retreat — collaboration with other districts, goal setting, the future of Sharon Center School, board operations, the budget and a summer activities program — and agreed to be polled on proposed dates for four half-day sessions.
Two resignations were recorded: Sara Cousins resigned as the Region 1 Board Representative, and art teacher Melissa Larkin submitted a resignation but will remain on staff through June 30, 2026.
The minutes show the Board of Finance will meet on May 19 to discuss the budget; the Board of Education scheduled a special meeting for May 20 at 4:00 p.m. to review the outcome. The record notes that Superintendent Brady-Shanley reviewed the evaluation process and that, later in the evening, the board moved into executive session at 7:53 p.m. to discuss a personnel matter. The executive session was described as work in progress and no official action was taken; executive session closed at 8:37 p.m., and the meeting adjourned at 8:38 p.m.
The minutes also include a chronology note that the regular meeting "ended at 7:45 p.m." before the evaluation and executive-session entries; the board minutes record both the 7:45 p.m. end-of-meeting line and the later executive-session times. The board clerk recorded the minutes as respectfully submitted by Cindy Webb.
