Upper Darby SD committee details 2026–27 re-registration for rising 6th and 9th graders

The Education and People Services Committee of the Upper Darby School District heard an overview of the district's re-registration process for rising sixth- and ninth-graders for the 2026–27 school year.
Brian, the district's director of pupil services, told the committee the re-registration period will open Wednesday, Feb. 25 and families can register online or in person. He said the process is intended to confirm residency for students entering middle and high school and to capture those registered under multiple-occupancy or support affidavits, which the district reviews annually under Policy 202.
The re-registration deadline is June 1. After that date the district will schedule disenrollment hearings for students who have not completed the process but who do not otherwise meet enrollment criteria; the district will continue to accept registrations for students who become eligible during the period. Brian said the re-registration program removed 68 students from the district rolls after hearings in 2024–25 and 59 in 2023–24; those counts exclude families who withdrew voluntarily or who re-registered after a hearing.
The district plans multiple communications channels to reach families: a notice at the committee meeting, messages through ParentLink (which the district said provides automated translation for families' preferred languages), weekly calls and emails from the pupil services office, an evening central-registration event on April 7 (with additional nights or weekends to be decided if needed), and in-person events at middle schools in May. If families remain unregistered by May 1, the district will send a sealed envelope home with students explaining the process.
Why this matters: re-registration affects students' eligibility for neighborhood placements and triggers administrative hearings that may result in disenrollment. Families seeking help or translation were instructed to contact the pupil services office; Brian said once a family re-registers they will be removed from reminder call and email lists.
The committee did not vote on this informational item; the district will implement outreach and return to the board as required by policy.
