Commission tables Long Meadow "No Thru Trucks" request until South Street detour ends

Neighbors petitioned the Middlebury Police Commission for a "No Thru Trucks" sign on Long Meadow Road, but the commission agreed on June 8 to delay action because a town-wide detour stemming from the South Street bridge closure has increased traffic on the route.
Chairman George Moreira introduced the petition and asked the chief and deputy chief for input. Chief Patrick Deely and others said the detour has temporarily altered traffic patterns — people coming from Naugatuck are using Long Meadow Road — and that any restriction put in place now would not reflect normal conditions. Commissioner Tom King asked whether vehicle type counts were available; the chief noted that roadside speed displays report vehicle counts but do not categorize by truck type.
First Selectwoman Jennifer Mahr offered to reach out to the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments (NVCOG) for technical assistance, and she estimated the South Street construction will conclude around September 2027. The commission agreed to write the resident explaining the detour and to revisit the petition after construction ends.
