Commission tables May minutes, approves committee and director reports; staffing and memorial bench plans discussed

At its June 2 meeting, the Middlebury Parks & Recreation Commission took several procedural and administrative actions and reviewed staffing and program updates.
Chair Carolanne Browne began by asking to table the May 5, 2026 minutes for additional review; Mike Roach moved to table the minutes and Robert Mastroianni seconded. The motion to table was approved unanimously. Later, commissioners voted unanimously on a motion by Robert Mastroianni and seconded by Mike Roach to approve the Committee Reports and the Director’s Report.
Director Betsy Anderson reported operational items: the Memorial Day Parade was canceled because of weather but the veterans reception was moved indoors; the MRA opens full-time on June 13; MRA season pass sales stood at 196 so far this year compared with 252 at the same time last year; three gate positions and supervisor roles have been filled but additional positions remain open; staff scheduling and supervisor coverage were discussed and Anderson will prepare reporting guidance for shifts.
The commission discussed a memorial bench program requested by residents. Commissioners said prices for ready-made benches and shipping can be high, and Browne suggested exploring local suppliers and splitting costs for shared dedications; two residents have already expressed interest. Betsy Anderson noted wooden benches from local shops would be less durable than metal benches and the commission will announce a program once a cost-effective option is finalized.
No formal budget approvals or contract awards were recorded at the meeting. The commission adjourned at 8:31 p.m.
