Middlebury readies Flag Day, summer concerts and Fourth of July events

Commissioners reviewed plans for Flag Day, the summer concert series and Fourth of July events tied to Middlebury’s 250th activities.
Jennifer Mahr said the Flag Day parade route has been published, flags have been purchased and the commission plans to let residents sponsor additional flags; sponsored flags will be posted on a Middlebury250 webpage as a memoriam. Mahr said the winning t-shirt design by Annika Kolloju is available and can be ordered on the Middlebury250 site.
Mahr said Fourth of July planning will include a reading of the Declaration of Independence around 1:15 p.m., coordinated timing with the national Ring the Bells at 2:00 p.m., and a time capsule ceremony related to the 250th-anniversary tree. The Flag Day celebration on June 14 is planned to include a 1:00 p.m. vehicle parade starting at the volunteer fire department, followed by Shepardson events from 2 to 4 p.m. with an ice cream social and Touch-A-Truck activities; military vehicle paperwork has been filed and volunteers were requested to staff bounce houses and concessions.
Carolanne Browne said she had submitted a write-up to Middlebury Neighbors Magazine announcing the summer concert schedule; concerts are free and attendees are asked to bring chairs. The kickoff concert is scheduled for July 2 with concessions provided by Bigcountry Grillin, which will donate proceeds to Parks & Recreation. Volunteer coverage is needed for some concerts, and parking logistics were discussed including a 10-minute pre-concert lot closure and overflow parking options across the street.
Commissioners also raised traffic-management concerns after the fireworks at Quassy and asked staff to coordinate with Naugatuck and Middlebury police and Quassy to reduce post-event congestion and avoid staff overtime. Jennifer Mahr said she will speak with Middlebury PD to seek solutions.
No formal approvals of new expenditures were recorded at the meeting; the commission discussed coordination and volunteer needs ahead of the summer season.
