Eversource notifies state of planned rate review; Middlebury to monitor potential impacts

Town officials told the Board of Selectmen June 1 that Eversource Energy plans to file for a base distribution rate review in Connecticut, a regulatory process the company said would be its first since 2017 and could lead to higher local delivery charges.
First Selectwoman Jennifer Mahr read a company notice informing regulators of Eversource’s intent to seek a rate update. The materials in the packet state the utility’s proposal could result in an average bill increase of roughly 11% across customer rate classes if approved, and that the full review typically takes about a year with public hearings and a final decision anticipated in mid-2027. The packet also described options to securitize certain storm costs to reduce immediate bill impacts and listed investments the company says are needed to maintain reliability.
Mahr said the town will monitor the process because any change in distribution rates can affect municipal bills and budgets. ‘‘Electric rates will affect town bills, so I will be keeping an eye on what they do here,’’ she said during the meeting.
The Board did not act on the matter; the item was presented as information and the town will follow state regulatory filings and scheduled hearings.
