Board approves new middle- and high-school science materials after multi-source review

Staff described the selection process: teams examined Iowa science standards updates, district assessment blueprints and proficiency data; they surveyed available high-quality instructional materials and narrowed vendors through classroom needs and a set of district "look-fors" the group labeled the "Mustang way." Middle-school staff recommended an OpenSci-aligned program for grades 6–8, citing hands-on and standards alignment. High-school staff recommended Inspire Science for biology, physics, environmental science and anatomy because of its fit for those courses. Staff noted some supplemental materials (for example, Gizmos and PhET-style simulations) would be retained as low-cost, hands-on supplements.
The administration estimated the purchase for middle and high school materials would be roughly $39,000. Board members asked whether lessons learned from prior curriculum rollouts—particularly technology-delivery challenges and late material arrival—had been addressed; staff said implementation supports and earlier procurement timing were being used to reduce transition friction.
The board approved the purchase by voice vote. Staff will proceed with ordering and implementation planning, including teacher supports and timing to maximize classroom readiness for the coming year.
