Historic Commission discusses future plaques program and website listings for historic homes

Commission staff told the Historic Commission on Sept. 16 that they are exploring a program to mark historic homes with plaques and develop a website section that would include histories and photos. Staff cited difficulties matching historic addresses to current parcels: historic records in the office use old addresses (for example, "301 Main Street") and staff have been cross-referencing to assign current addresses.
A staff member described plans to present the proposal at the Trail Head Museum meeting scheduled for the next day and to pursue a phased approach: complete research on identified houses, link to existing Live Oak articles when available, and consider plaques and a phone-based QR system that would provide detailed histories online. "Paul stopped in a couple weeks ago and recommended that we start working on the possibility of a future historic program with plaques," staff said, and noted that Paul's wife Kathy had suggested an on-site post with a number that a phone could read for more information.
Staff said they have histories for about eight houses and that in some cases they have contacted current or former owners to collect photos and background. Commissioners and staff discussed the need to identify funding; staff said plaques were "definitely down the road" and that museum presentation and volunteer support could help move the project forward.
Staff intends to present the idea at the Trail Head Museum meeting and requested commission assistance in identifying houses and confirming locations. There was no formal motion or funding decision recorded at the meeting.
