Police Chief Mike Hardy told the Abbeville City Council that a homicide occurred Sunday night and that a juvenile suspect was arrested and detained in juvenile facilities; the chief said the suspect will be adjudicated later in the week. "A young man was killed," the chief said, and officials asked the community for patience as the investigation and adjudication proceed.
Council members used the report to raise broader concerns about juvenile crime, enforcement of curfews and community trust. The chief and council described recent outreach efforts, called for neighborhood-watch participation and said the department is actively recruiting to address officer shortfalls that limit coverage at times.
The council and chief acknowledged that officers respond to high volumes of calls and that staffing constraints affect the department's ability to enforce curfews and juvenile-related ordinances consistently. The chief invited residents to contact him directly and encouraged community cooperation to help solve crimes and improve public safety.
