Selectmen approve destruction of surplus rifle and $15,000 transfer for police overtime and CSO coverage

The Board of Selectmen approved turning over a surplus Colt law-enforcement carbine (serial number LE036371) to the Connecticut State Police Special Licensing and Firearms Unit for destruction.
Separately, the board approved a $15,000 in-series transfer requested by Chief David Furlong to cover increased overtime, support for community events and training shifts for newly hired civilian service officers (CSOs). Chief Furlong said the department had 14 CSOs but recently lost two to resignations and that an application process is open to recruit replacements. "We had 14. We just had two resign," Furlong said, noting his department has historically held up to 17 CSOs.
Both items were approved by voice vote. The rifle will be surrendered for destruction per state process; the overtime and staffing funds will be processed and monitored by department finance staff.
