Town Council voted to match Tree Commission funding to publish an updated list of acceptable tree replacements and to produce interpretive graphics to accompany the list. Rebecca Fanning, who presented the item, said staff had worked with the Tree Commission on the update and that a funding source had been identified; the Tree Commission offered a contribution and requested the Town provide a match.
The council then voted unanimously to match the funds for the tree-replacement list and associated graphics. Ms. Fanning described the project as a joint effort to guide landscaping choices on the Island.
Separately, the council considered sponsoring the Beneath the Oaks symposium. Ms. Fanning said the Tree Commission recommended the Palmetto Sponsorship level because this year's topic — the environmental impacts of landscaping professionals — is especially relevant to the town. Council voted 5-1 to approve an $850 sponsorship at the Palmetto level that forgoes the event reception, with Councilmember Scott Millimet recording the lone opposing vote.
Both votes were procedural approvals to spend modest town resources on community and educational efforts; neither action enacted new regulations.
Votes at the meeting: matching funds for the tree-replacement list passed unanimously; Beneath the Oaks sponsorship at $850 passed 5-1 (Millimet opposed).
