Sullivan's Island council authorizes negotiations for stormwater work using Charleston County fees

Sullivan's Island Town Council unanimously approved a motion to authorize town staff to negotiate a contract with Sanders Brothers Construction Company to perform stormwater maintenance from Station 18 through Station 19, using up to $200,000 from Charleston County stormwater fees collected from local residents since 2007.
The authorization, made after an executive session, directs staff to begin negotiations but does not award a final contract. The motion was moved by Councilmember Carl Hubbard, seconded by Councilmember Gary Visser, and passed without opposition.
Council said the funding would come from Charleston County stormwater fees the county has collected from Sullivan's Island residents. The motion language specified that up to $200,000 of those county-collected stormwater funds could be used to resume cleaning work described in the Station 18, 18½, and 19 stormwater plan.
Mayor Patrick O'Neil and administrators framed the vote as a step to reopen talks with a local contractor; no construction work was authorized by the motion itself. Town Administrator Joe Henderson previously announced a public groundbreaking for a separate SCIIP-funded stormwater project on Sept. 26 at Jasper Boulevard and Station 28½, which remains a distinct project.
The council's action follows staff and committee discussion about stormwater maintenance and funding sources. The council did not specify a contract award date; staff will return with negotiated terms for council approval as required.
Votes at the meeting: the authorization to negotiate with Sanders Brothers Construction passed unanimously. No final contract was approved at the Sept. 16 meeting.
