City staff presented a concept for a permanent Veterans Memorial Park behind the Calera library, combining a donated military aircraft, a granite memorial wall and QR‑linked storytelling to preserve veterans’ biographies.
James told the council the Alabama Museum of Aviation has agreed to donate an aircraft for the 40‑foot circular plaza. The estimated project budget is $65,000; staff said they will apply for a $50,000 T‑Mobile grant and seek local donations or sponsorships to cover the remainder. The proposal would use QR codes on the memorial wall to link visitors to recorded stories or tributes; city staff proposed involving a high‑school marketing class to produce the digital stories and asked citizens and businesses to provide letters of support required by the grant application.
Main Street staff reported two awards for the local rodeo and announced Swing Bays, a swing‑bay golf simulator with bar service, as an incoming downtown merchant expected to open in roughly 90–120 days and to support Main Street’s entertainment district strategy. Main Street also listed upcoming events: Luck of the Hot Rods car show (Mar. 14), Strawberry Festival (Apr. 25), First Fridays crawfish boil (Apr. 3) and the inaugural Calera color run (May 3).
Council members and staff encouraged residents to submit letters of support for the veterans grant, and Main Street leaders framed the new merchant and event program as part of a sales‑tax retention and downtown activation strategy.
