Cordele, Ga. — The Cordele City Commission voted on June 16 to approve an intergovernmental agreement with the county to place a 1% floating local-option sales tax on the November ballot. City staff said the measure follows procedures required by state law and, if approved by voters, the revenue would be distributed between Cordele and the county.
Staff described the proposed split as 32.5% to the city and 67.5% to the county. According to the presentation, the stated purpose of the tax is to reduce property taxes imposed by both the county and the municipality; staff noted that if voters approve the measure in November the city would see only part of the collection in 2027 with the full tax-reduction effect reflected in 2028.
The motion to approve the intergovernmental agreement passed by voice vote. Staff offered to provide additional public information on timing and projected impacts; commissioners and staff used the meeting to explain the referendum mechanics and the city’s anticipated share of revenue.
