Darien trims Great Island purchase appropriation, approves access project committee and survey transfer

The Darien Board of Selectmen on March 9 approved a series of actions on the Great Island property: the board voted to decrease the appropriation and bond authorization for the 60‑acre purchase by $2,304,999, recommended that change to the Board of Finance, and authorized creation of a five‑member Building Committee for the Great Island Access project.
Town Administrator Jennifer Charneski presented updated expenditure information tied to the purchase; Selectman Monica McNally said the Representative Town Meeting had approved the appropriation for the Early Access project and that staff will next work on a contract with landscape architecture firm Reed Hilderbrand.
The board also approved a transfer of $6,000 from the Board of Finance capital reserve to pay for a Great Island topographic survey, recommending that transfer to the Board of Finance. Motions on the appropriation reduction, building committee creation and the transfer were passed unanimously.
The Early Access project remains in the contracting and planning phase; staff indicated the next step is negotiating the contract with Reed Hilderbrand and forming the Building Committee to oversee access project implementation.
