A motion to exercise the city’s contractual termination rights with the county sheriff’s office prompted the council to debate a possible end to the current law‑enforcement contract.
Councilmember (speaker 4) initially moved to give 18 months’ notice to terminate the contract and said doing so could save the city roughly $655,333 in the first partial year and “probably in excess of $800,000 a year” thereafter, citing monthly and annual figures as a rationale for rethinking the current arrangement. After legal counsel (City Attorney Chloe, speaker 6) advised the council to review the most recent amendment to the agreement before taking action, the member who made the motion rescinded it and instead proposed directing the city attorney to review the full contract and present findings at the July 20 council meeting. The council approved that approach 5–0.
Mayor (speaker 2) and other members emphasized they wanted a cautious, legally sound process rather than an immediate termination. The city will ask the attorney to review termination provisions, past amendments and legal timing and to return with recommended next steps at a future meeting.
