Resident says Hazel Park code enforcement has not resolved years‑long nuisance at adjacent property

William Dre addressed the Hazel Park City Council during public comment on Dec. 9 to report a long‑running code‑enforcement issue at the property next door to his home at 429 West Garfield.
Dre said he bought his house in 1997 and has raised repeated complaints since October 2023, presenting photos showing tall, salvaged fence panels exceeding permitted heights, shredded tarps hanging over the fence, two junk cars with no plates, broken windows and rodent activity. "I went to code enforcement in October 2023 ... I failed to get his card ... he was interested enough to come out that same day ... he had already cited her for the same issue and ordered her to tear down all this stuff," Dre said, adding that the neighbor cleared one side yard after a complaint but not the side visible from his property.
When Dre raised the issue, a council member called for follow up and staff indicated they would check enforcement records. "We'll find out in staff meeting tomorrow and we'll have an update," a staff representative said on the record. Council asked for contact information and directed staff to follow up with Dre.
