The St. John the Baptist Parish School Board voted to grant administration authority to establish a 501(c)(3) foundation and discussed outstanding administrative and charter matters during its Jan. 14 meeting.
By unanimous recorded motion with one member absent (10 Yeas, 1 Absent), the board granted authority to pursue formation of a 501(c)(3). During discussion of redistricting, Mrs. Debra Schum noted that a South Central Planning report proposal had been approved previously but that the district never issued a Notice to Proceed; Dr. Lynett Hookfin said administration will investigate what happened and what steps are needed to complete the work.
On a related governance matter, Mr. Wayne Stewart summarized the status of the charter school proposed by Louisiana Premiere Charter (LAPC): the board approved LAPC in January 2020 but LAPC provided no substantive communication during the pandemic, a signed agreement surfaced in an email months later, and LAPC did not respond to a Department of Justice request for information. The board asked Mr. Stewart to draft a letter to LAPC asking the charter group to clarify its intentions and next steps.
