Superintendent outlines testing schedule, charter counsel and a summer 'S.H.I.N.E.' program

During the April 15 meeting, Superintendent Dr. Lynett Hookfin reviewed several operational updates for St. John the Baptist Parish schools, including testing schedules, legal counsel for a desegregation matter and a proposed summer learning program.
Dr. Juanita Hill reported district LEAP 2025 expectations by content area and grade. Among listed figures were expected testers for Algebra (377), Geometry (361), English I (449), English II (489), Biology (410) and U.S. History (421). The board was given a testing calendar with dates in April and May 2021 and multiple makeup windows.
On charter and legal matters, Dr. Hookfin said general counsel Orthenal Jasmin recommended retaining Hammonds, Sills, Adkins, Guice, Noah & Perkins LLP to serve as desegregation counsel; Bob Hammonds and colleagues Pamela Dill and John Blanchard will assist, and will coordinate with the district’s work on a Type 1 charter with La. Premiere Charter under lead Wayne Stewart.
Dr. Hookfin also proposed modifying the Curriculum Development Committee (Policy BCB) to serve as the Academic Committee and said the district will develop a true district‑level virtual school so teachers would not be required to teach both in‑person and virtual simultaneously.
Mrs. Patricia Triche presented a draft plan for a summer acceleration and enrichment program titled S.H.I.N.E. (Super Heroes In Non‑Stop Education). The program, intended for incoming K–8 scholars, would mix academics, enrichment and physical activity and target 75% enrollment at each site. Partners listed include United Way, the Sheriff’s Office, Judge Nighana Lewis, the District Attorney’s Office and the Parish President’s Office. Dr. Hookfin said ESSER funds would cover program costs and the district is proposing higher pay for staff running these programs to encourage participation.
