Council approves interlocal agreement to report violent deaths to statewide database

Lincoln — The City Council unanimously approved an interlocal agreement on June 29 between the Lincoln Police Department and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to participate in the Nebraska Violent Death Reporting System.
Assistant Chief Ryan Dale described the program as a statewide effort that compiles data on homicides, suicides, overdoses and poisonings to help identify patterns and prevention strategies. “This interlocal agreement simply allows us the LPD to be reimbursed for the overtime that is used to review these death cases and submit the data so that there's no cost to the citizens of Lincoln,” Dale said.
Council members praised the use of data for prevention. The motion to approve the interlocal agreement carried by unanimous roll call.
Why it matters: The database supports public‑health and law‑enforcement efforts to identify trends in violent and preventable deaths and informs prevention programming. The reimbursement clause is intended to remove budget barriers for LPD participation.
