Police chief says approved hire did not respond; council agrees to continue recruitment for one part-time officer

Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a candidate approved at the previous meeting has not responded to outreach and that the department will continue recruitment.
"He said he has tried to make contact but has had no luck. He is assuming he is no longer interested," Pernice said, reporting that there are 32 candidates on the consortium list. Pernice said he would reach out to the consortium, check with the Civil Service Commission about arranging oral examinations and send letters to prospective candidates.
Pernice told council that, ultimately, he would like two part-time officers but that only one position had been approved at present. Council members agreed to continue searching to fill one part-time officer slot. No formal motion to authorize an additional position was recorded at the meeting.
The chief’s comments were presented as an operational update; no changes to staffing policy or budgets were recorded. Next steps recorded in the meeting minutes call for the chief to contact the consortium and the Civil Service Commission and to send follow-up letters to candidates.
