Port Barre council adopts 5.130-mill tax rate, authorizes sale process for Glass Systems building

The Town of Port Barre’s mayor and board of aldermen adopted a millage rate of 5.130 mills for tax year 2025 and authorized the former Glass Systems building to begin sale procedures during their regular meeting on May 6.
The actions were unanimous. Sammy W. Hardy II moved to adopt the 5.130-mill rate; the motion was seconded by Gregory P. Haroy and carried without recorded opposition. Ronnie Kimble moved and Sammy W. Hardy II seconded a separate motion to permit the Glass Systems building to start the procedures necessary to sell the property; that motion also passed unanimously. The council also voted to accept all financial and departmental reports on a motion by Oonalo Robin, seconded by Sammy W. Hardy II.
Mayor John P. Ardoin called upon the Police Department and public-works staff for routine updates. Officer Christy Janise attended on behalf of Chief Boudreaux and delivered the monthly Police Department activity report. Gregory Leger, town superintendent, summarized ongoing public-works activities. Parks and Recreation Director Kyia Rivette was not in attendance; Mayor Ardoin provided an update on Youth League and other parks and recreation matters in her absence.
During a brief general-discussion period the council and members of the audience addressed a range of local concerns, including loose animals, baseball-game umpiring and league coaching procedures, acquisition of new police units, riding of golf carts, yard/grass cutting, lighting at the Saizan Avenue ballpark, recognition of the PBHS Fishing Team championship, service dogs in Veteran’s Memorial Park, and a request about the sign in front of Town Hall. Those items were discussed for information; no formal votes on those topics were recorded in the minutes.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn by Susie Hebert, seconded by Gregory P. Haroy. All recorded motions in the minutes were recorded as unanimous and the council adjourned.
