Council approves victim services grants, mutual aid addition, public mural and park repairs

The Sullivan's Island Town Council approved several community-focused actions at its April 15 meeting.
Funding: Council adopted a resolution to provide funding of up to $10,000 each from the Town's Victim Advocate Fund to three nonprofit organizations: the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center, My Sister's House, and Tri-County S.P.E.A.K.S. Mayor Patrick O'Neil explained the money is retained from a percentage of court fines paid to the Town and is distributed annually.
Public safety: Council approved adding the Summerville Police Department to the Town's mutual aid agreement list; Deputy Police Chief Monty Anders reviewed the department's existing mutual aid partners.
Public art and parks: Council approved an interactive mural by artist Kelsey Montague to be painted on the side of Battery Jasper for the SC250 celebrations; Zoning Administrator Charles Drayton said a $13,000 grant has been requested toward an $18,000 total cost and the hospitality fund could cover any remaining amount. The council also approved resurfacing and restriping Poe Park's tennis and pickleball courts at an estimated cost of about $25,000, to be funded from the Recreation budget, citing faded lines and unsafe conditions.
