Cordele commission approves grant administration resolution, Juneteenth permit and routine items; manager highlights missing-person case and community events

At its May 19 meeting, the Cordele City Commission unanimously approved a resolution directing that, should the 2027 Community Development Block Grant be awarded, the city use River Valley Regional Commission to administer and manage the grant. The commission also approved an event permit for a Juneteenth celebration on June 19, 2026, at Gillespie Selden Auditorium with requested street closures; the organizer was identified as Isaac Owen, president of the N-double-A-C-P.
Commissioners certified the election of GMA District 8 officers for 2026–2027. The city manager’s report included community notices: an update that Naisha Pickett remains missing nearly two years (contact tips and phone numbers were provided), pet-of-the-week information for the animal shelter, and a list of upcoming community events including the Mental Health Awareness Walk, a Red Cross blood drive and a Gallery 41 amateur photo contest. The commission also approved a $200 discretionary fund request to provide breakfast for volunteers placing Memorial Day flags.
No legislative or financial commitment beyond the administrative approvals noted above was taken at the meeting; items referred to planning/zoning and the utility-resolution implementation were scheduled for follow-up.
