Sterling Agricultural Commission approves May minutes, presents scholarship and advances fall event plans

The Sterling Agricultural Commission met via Zoom on June 4, 2026, and approved the minutes of its May 14 special meeting. Committee member Katie Patton moved to approve the minutes; Recording Secretary Rebecca Gervais seconded and the motion passed.
The treasurer reported a balance of $6,966.92 and noted a $1,000 withdrawal to fund the Verna Cole Scholarship. The scholarship check was presented to the 2026 recipient, Brianna Gervais.
Commissioners reviewed Farm Day activities, which included chickens, a beehive, a tractor and a pumpkin-planting contest. Betsy’s Stand donated soil, pots and seeds for the contest; the Ekonk Junior Grange donated honey sticks and offered $100 toward Family Day prizes. The minutes record a request that students in grades 6–8 be allowed to visit during their recess; the record also notes that a drone proved distracting to younger children.
On Farm-to-Table planning, Committee member Katie Patton said she will contact Chris Kelley about cooking. The group discussed brisket as the preferred meat and suggested either Sept. 19 or Sept. 26 for the event.
The commission also discussed continuing recruitment for new members and noted that Heather Nickerson has been contacted to collect receipts for Ag in the Classroom. Recording Secretary Rebecca Gervais moved to adjourn the meeting at 6:37 p.m.; Katie Patton seconded and the motion carried 4–0.
The commission recorded two members of the public in attendance and will carry unfinished items forward to a future meeting.
