The Ferndale School Board voted Nov. 18 to approve multiple action items discussed at the committee of the whole on Nov. 4.
Contracts: The board approved bond-program contract recommendations for University High School summer renovations and additions, including a bid-package contract in the amount of $3,379,372 and an 8% construction contingency. The administration asked the board to authorize execution of the contracts with the trades listed in the recommendation. The motion passed on a roll-call vote with six yes votes.
Curriculum: The board approved a personal finance proposal to embed personal-finance standards into existing high-school economics courses and to increase the number of required credits by 0.5; administrators said the change does not create an additional course for any graduating student. The motion was moved by John and seconded by Jen and passed by roll call (six yes).
School of Choice: The board added and then approved an item to open a limited second-semester School of Choice window for University High School from Dec. 9 through Dec. 20, 2024, accepting 10 seats each for grades 9, 10 and 11 under the parameters of the Michigan Department of Education pupil-accounting manual. The board added item 8.3 to the agenda and later approved the request; both votes passed by roll call (six yes).
Consent agenda: Earlier in the meeting the board approved the consent agenda (minutes, personnel and bills and accounts for October 2024) by roll call.
Procedural notes: Votes were recorded by roll call with six yes votes on the major action items; board members present and recorded in roll-call sequence included the trustee list printed at the meeting.
The administration said the bond work will proceed under the approved contracts and that the personal-finance standards will be embedded into existing courses as described.
