New ninth-grade integrated physical science course introduced at Nathan Taylor High School

Arthur Bell, the school's newly hired physics and physical-science teacher, told the East Haddam School District Board of Education on Feb. 11 that his Integrated Physical Science course rearranges ninth-grade science to introduce physics concepts earlier and give students a stronger foundation for later courses.
"My name is Arthur Bell. I am our newly hired physics and physical science teacher at Nathan Taylor High School," Bell said, and described a four‑unit sequence that moves from "creation of matter" through earth systems and culminates in "forces and energy on Earth," where physics ideas are woven into other units rather than treated as an isolated topic. He added that the course is aligned with NGSS standards and aims to reduce gaps before students take the state exam in later grades.
Bell showed classroom activities and labs he uses to make abstract concepts tangible, including a conservation-of-angular-momentum demonstration, a student-built timeline project modeling star birth-to-death stages, a friction lab comparing surfaces, and a "gravitational well" made with a blanket and bowling ball to visualize orbits. "Science is hard," Bell said. "I don't shy away from that; my job is to try to be the middleman to explain that science." He told the board he expects the approach to increase students' ability to apply concepts in chemistry and biology as they advance.
Board members praised Bell's enthusiasm and hands-on approach and asked to schedule classroom visits. The presentation noted that this is the program's first year in the district; Bell said there are not yet outcome data but that the goal is measurable improvement in NGSS performance over time.
The district's administrators and board members discussed how the course helps scaffold standards so juniors taking state science assessments will be better prepared. Bell said the course does not omit required standards and that some NGSS items traditionally deferred until later can now be introduced earlier to reduce knowledge gaps.
The board did not take any formal action on the course at the meeting; members requested follow-up materials and proposed board visits to observe the new units in action.
