Surgoinsville board approves roof replacement and multiple budget amendments

The Surgoinsville Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Nov. 12 approved a series of budget amendments and purchases, including a $5,187 roof replacement for a town‑owned property, two used pickup trucks for Public Works and the Fire Department, department sweatshirts and $50 Christmas bonuses for volunteer firefighters.
Recorder Megan Gentry told the board that Thacker's Roofing would install architectural shingles with a lifetime warranty on the roof at 1034 Main Street for a total of $5,187. Alderman Mierek moved to accept the Thacker's Roofing quote; Vice‑Mayor Jarnagin seconded, and the motion passed on a unanimous roll call of voting members.
City financial documents for October — a year‑to‑date trial balance and a tax‑aggregate summary — were provided by City Recorder Megan Gentry and approved on motion by Vice‑Mayor Jarnagin and seconded by Alderman Bishop.
The board approved a $1,000 budget amendment to account 110‑43190‑943 to purchase a 2018 Dodge Ram 3500 4WD crew cab for Public Works. Maintenance Manager Donnie Morrison told the board he did not want the truck assigned to Public Works and preferred that the funds be used to replace a flatbed; despite his objection the motion by Alderman Mierek, seconded by Vice‑Mayor Jarnagin, passed unanimously among voting members.
A separate $1,000 amendment to account 110‑42200‑943 was approved to acquire a 2015 Chevrolet 2500 4WD double cab for the Fire Department, following a motion by Alderman Mierek and second by Vice‑Mayor Jarnagin. The board also approved a $960 amendment (110‑42200‑326) to purchase sweatshirts for the Fire Department and a $600 amendment (110‑41500‑134) to provide $50 Christmas bonuses to each fire‑department volunteer; both measures passed on unanimous roll calls among voting members.
Where votes were recorded as a roll call, Alderman Collier participated by telephone and did not register votes on items noted as not voting.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:36 p.m. The board also acknowledged that State Representative Gary Hicks Jr. is expected to attend the Dec. 2024 meeting to swear in an elected alderman from the November election.
