Demorest, Ga. — During its Aug. 5 meeting the Demorest City Council conducted a first reading of a proposed amendment to Chapter 42 of the Code of Ordinances aimed at addressing knowingly disruptive behavior at public meetings.
City Attorney Thomas Mitchell advised that the current drafting of Chapter 42 is not constitutional as written and recommended adopting the proposed amendment to clarify and narrow the ordinance. The item was recorded as a first reading; no final adoption was recorded at the meeting.
The council did not take a final vote on the ordinance at this session. Additional drafting, legal review and a future council action will be necessary to finalize the ordinance language and any enforcement procedures.
