Board told dyslexia interventions rose sharply; two certified interventionists added

Dr. Arbuckle briefed the board on dyslexia services, reporting that the district served 118 students in 2024–25 and 211 students this year — a 79% increase in students receiving dyslexia intervention — and that the number of students identified as exhibiting characteristics of dyslexia rose from 139 last year to 186 this year (a 34% increase).
To respond, the board has already approved two additional certified dyslexia interventionist positions for 2026–27, both of which have been filled, Dr. Arbuckle said. The district is adding a K–1 intervention program using the BUILD program; Miss Sparks will serve students with the highest needs in kindergarten and will provide small groups with trained teachers to deliver the program. Administrators emphasized the importance of early intervention, noting work in kindergarten and first grade is more efficient than remediation later in elementary school.
Board members asked clarifying questions about staffing and legal requirements; administrators described the work as time‑consuming and noted the district expects the number of students served to continue increasing.
No separate vote was required tonight beyond the previously approved staffing changes; the board acknowledged the staffing additions and program rollout.
