In first grade literacy, the share of students at the lowest level (Level 1) decreased from 27% last year to 8% this year, while the proportion at Level 3 increased from 28% to 43% and Level 4 rose from 4% to 10%. For second graders, Level‑1 literacy fell from 44% to 31% year over year; the share at levels 3 and 4 combined increased from 28% to 33%. In math, second‑grade Level‑1 fell from 40% to 27% and the share at levels 3 and 4 rose from 30% to 36%.
Dr. Arbuckle told the board those K–2 gains should have "dividends" for third‑grade starting points next year and emphasized the connection between assessment results and staffing decisions. He noted a small discrepancy in his remarks (at one point he referenced 13 students without exemptions and later said 12) and said the district will provide final numbers after this week's retesting.
Board members had no further questions on the report. The district will update board staffing plans and promotion lists once retest results are finalized.
