Mitchum framed the initiative as cautious engagement rather than avoidance: "AI is here to stay," he said, describing work to define when and how AI tools can be used in teaching and learning. He also noted the district’s recognition of long-serving employees (10, 15, 20 and 30 years) at kickoff events.
The board did not take action on the pilot during the meeting; the report served to notify trustees of the program and the planned committee work. Trustees generally praised the kickoff and the emphasis on preparing staff for the school year.
The district’s next regular board meeting is Sept. 9; staff will report further details about policies related to AI and other curriculum matters as the committee forms.
