Board holds public hearing on districtwide safety plan; presenters cite new state law requiring CPR training

The East Hampton Union Free School District held a public hearing to outline updates to its districtwide safety plan after a new state law this spring required schools to provide age‑appropriate instruction for students and training for staff on recognizing cardiac arrest. A district presenter explained the plan, its public posting and the next steps.

The presenter said the plan "is posted on our website in English and Spanish" and that "it requires that students and staff are provided with training in techniques of recognizing cardiac arrest." The presentation described how lessons will be tailored by age and noted the district’s existing AED inventory and a roster of staff who are already CPR certified.

The presenter told the board the district intends to use the first days of school and faculty meetings for staff refreshers, and that district nurses will help remind staff where AEDs are located. The plan also documents AED locations including the high‑school turf fields and describes annual checks and maintenance of equipment.

Board members asked specific operational questions — including whether Harrick Park and outdoor sites are covered and how machines are monitored — and the presenter said machines are checked and that nurses and support staff will be involved in training and coordination.

Under the law the district must accept comments on proposed changes for 30 days; the presenter said the board will consider adoption at its Aug. 11 meeting. The hearing was closed by voice vote.
