Opponents said the town is close to its annual town meeting and that funds budgeted for town counsel might be better used to get through that event without adding interim payroll now. Rich Chaffy argued the town should conserve resources and use town counsel instead of hiring immediately; Lori Barkcus and others noted the town’s warrant is largely complete and that new staff would require time to onboard amid a busy schedule.
The board discussed compromise options — appointing an interim with a delayed start date such as June 1 or asking an interim to attend town meeting in a non-executive capacity — and agreed to contact all three finalists to confirm continued interest. Sarah Campbell said she would reach out to candidates and put the item on the next meeting agenda. The motion to appoint was not finalized; the board will make a final decision at the next meeting.
