Ontario proclaims National Preparedness Month and Senior Center Month; seniors press for more access and transportation

The council designated September 2024 as National Preparedness Month and as National Senior Center Month.
Emergency Manager Joseph Ramos told the council the Office of Emergency Management will distribute disaster-preparedness guides in print and online and will provide presentations to senior centers, businesses and youth groups across the city. "Our residents can obtain resources and tips on preparing yourself and your family," Ramos said, and the guide is available at readyontario.com, he added.
On the Senior Center proclamation, Council Member Wapner and several senior attendees recounted the senior center’s history and thanked OmniTrans for stepping in with transportation. Wapner said OmniTrans provided three new vehicles to assist senior transportation but noted more vehicles are needed. "I urge all of you to take advantage of transportation that's available to you," he said.
Senior center attendee Pete Baines urged staff to consider keeping the senior center open on some holidays because many members use the center five days a week. Council members and staff noted volunteer opportunities at the senior center, library and museum and asked for time to explore options.
No formal policy or funding decisions were made during the meeting; staff said they would follow up on transportation outreach and volunteer opportunities.
