Cochran council accepts $84,900 conservation grant for Willie Basby Park with $85,000 local match

Council Member Shane Savant questioned the project’s proximity to other parks and suggested directing funds to the Ash Street park instead. Council Member Gary Ates strongly advocated accepting the grant to benefit District 1 residents. Ates moved to accept the grant and to fund the required $85,000 match from recreation SPLOST funds; Council Member Keith Anderson seconded the motion.
The motion passed 4–1, with Council Members Keith Anderson, Gary Ates, Andrew Lemmon and Lonnie Tedders voting in favor and Council Member Shane Savant opposed. The city will proceed to finalize grant acceptance and contract terms consistent with the grant agreement and SPLOST funding rules.
