The joint boards accepted a draft "responsible screen time" policy (draft policy 6120) for first reading on May 26, directing administrators to produce regulations that define active versus passive technology use and to audit district ed-tech tools.
Drafters said the policy prioritizes teacher-directed, hands-on learning and restricts passive uses such as undirected browsing and autoplay video, particularly for pre-K through grade 2. The policy includes explicit exceptions for state testing, IEP/504 supports and necessary medical monitoring devices, and it directs administration to catalog and assess roughly 50 district tools to determine whether they align with "active" instructional goals.
Sarah, who oversees ed‑tech inventory, told the boards the district tracks approximately 51 paid tools and many shared platforms; usage analytics can show minutes spent on a tool but must be interpreted carefully (for example, reading time may not register as active input). Board members asked administrators to clarify how the policy will accommodate required assessment access and to produce a clear carveout list for pre-K–2.
The policy was advanced to second reading with the administration tasked to: (1) define "limited teacher-directed use" for pre-K–2, (2) map specific tools to active/passive designations, and (3) ensure staff training and curricular alignment ahead of implementation. The boards emphasized that regulations, not the policy itself, will spell out operational details and exceptions.
